Softball: On Like Donkey Kong

Put down that video game and get outside, boy!

Dust off them sneakers and yank your jersey outta that pile of dust rags. Media League Softball is alive and well.

Media League Commissioner Tom Jones is back from a crazy winter and ready to play ball. Having been knighted today, it's unclear how much we'll see him on the field, what with all the dragon-fighting to be done Across the Pond. But we can be confident that'll he'll be sauvely working behind the scenes to deliver another stellar softball season for us lowly media serfs.

On to the nut-cuttin'. Here's the top things for you to know about this season:

There's no sponsor -- yet. What does that mean to us? It means each team might have to pay $400 to play. Jones and Co. are working to find sponsorships to mitigate costs, so it might be someone comes through in the end and we won't have to pony up a fee.

Our softball budget might provide some fee relief. In the event we do have to pay, our company softball budget might pay for part of the fee, cutting the per-play costs. I'm working on that now with Hal and Jeff.

Tom Jones, the knight in black satin Underroos

Play begins April 29. Games are held each Saturday at Reservoir Park in Little Rock off Cantrell Road, just like last year. We play every weekend up to Memorial Day weekend (no games), then straight through to July 1st (no games). The end of the season tournament will be on July 8th, with a rainout date for the tournament for July 15th, if needed.

A sign-up sheet is up now in the break room. If you want to play, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board near the snack machine. We'll need your t-shirt size (for jerseys) and the position you'd like to play.

It's co-ed! And we need ladies. So sign up!

What you'll need: Baseball or softball glove and a willingness to win! Don't worry if you've never played. Our team training program is second to none.

Practice
Once the team is set, we'll see about reserving the field for a couple of practices. The Dem Bums team has already inquired about us playing a scrimmage with them on April 23. Depending on what everyone wants to do, we might take them up on it.

So get on that sign up sheet so we can get the ball rolling! We're looking forward to another winning season, and want even more ABPGers to be a part of it. E-mail me with questions or comments!
