Newshounds' Hot Win

Chip leaves 'em in stitches

After a two-week hiatus, the Newshounds returned in top form to whip KATV-TV, Channel 7, taking the the ABPG team to a solid 6-1 record. Saturday's game almost didn't happen, as KATV struggled to find enough players to fill out a team and avoid a forfeit. In fact, the Newshound's 11 a.m. matchup was only the second official game played that day, with the 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. games unplayed due to forfeit.

Saturday's game saw the Newshounds start off a little sluggish, owing to the two-week break in action that preceded. But after an iffy first inning, the Newshounds found their legs and began making big plays and hitting solid bats. Outstanding plays of the game included a great hit by J.J. and Susan's expert defensive scoop at second base and her barely in-bounds offensive shot down the third-base line (a technique Mike Pirnique also executed with ease).

But Saturday's MVP and Newshounds Sportsmanship Award winner was centerfielder Chip Taulbee, who earned a nice badge of honor after getting beaned with a softball sliding (safe!) into second base. Kudos to Chip for retaining consciousness and having the presence of mind to ask, "So I'm safe, right?"

Batting Order:

14, Mike "Big Pirn" Pirnique (SS)
16, Elana Geffken (C)
Sean Dunbar (3rd)
1, Brent Birch (LF)
2, Susan Mulhearn (2nd)
23, Chip Taulbee (RC)/7, Lance Turner
22, Kat Horan (P)
27, Seth Mulhearn (1st)
19, Nate Hinkel (LC)
6, JJ Watkins (RF)

The Newshounds hit the dirt again at 9 a.m. this coming Saturday, taking on KARK-TV, Channel 4, which lost this week to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Dem Bums team.

Until next week, we leave you with another glimpse at greatness, a portrait of a true champion:

Chip, swollen with pride

Way to sacrifice your body for the team, Chip "Cheek-bone" Taulbee! We appreciate your dedication.
